Tequila Sunrise

I began painting in 1999 by taking a watercolor class at the local library. I was hooked, instantly, and took every class and workshop I could find. I now teach that class, hoping to spread my enjoyment and enthusiasm for watercolor to others.

I have taken my own art to new levels by switching from realism to abstraction, and adding mixed media and collage. I still take the occasional class or workshop, but only if it offers me new insight into technique or design.

I work intuitively, beginning my pieces without knowing what they will be. Some become florals, others landscapes and some are simply non-objective abstracts.

I hope my viewers find my work new and exciting and spend the time to take in the nuances of each piece, as there is usually something more there than first meets the eye.

Exuberance

Helen Wheatley grew up on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and moved to Florida’s Space Coast in 1995, with her husband, John.

Inspired by the beauty of the area, Ms. Wheatley started painting watercolors in 1999. Helen has used her own photographs as reference to create beautiful florals, vivid still lifes, and other scenes. She now works more abstractly and has won many ribbons in local Art shows.

Helen has begun to enhance and expand her art by introducing collage and acrylics into her paintings and working in clay. She also enjoys Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) and has completed her course of studies in the Sogetsu school.

Ms. Wheatley is a member of the Central Brevard Art Association, Brevard Watercolor Society, Florida Watercolor Society, Titusville Art League and The Strawbridge Art League.

Helen finds art to be an ongoing learning process and strives to keep improving by experimenting with new mediums and studying with artists whose work she admires.
